As Above, So Below is a 2014 American found footage horror film directed by John Erick Dowdle and written by Dowdle and his brother Drew. The film was produced by Legendary Pictures and distributed by Universal Pictures, making it the first film in Legendarys deal with Universal. It was released in selected theaters on August 22, 2014, and worldwide on August 29, 2014. The film stars Perdita Weeks, Ben Feldman, Edwin Hodge, Francois Civil, Marion Lambert, and Ali Marhyar. As Above So Below follows the story of Scarlett Marlowe (Perdita Weeks), a young alchemy scholar, continuing her dead father's (Roger Van Hool) work searching for the philosophers stone,a legendary alchemical substance said to be capable of turning base metals such as lead into gold and granting eternal life, discovered by Nicolas Flamel. In the opening scene of the film, Scarlett has smuggled herself into Iran to search for the Rose Key, an artifact that is essentially the Rosetta Stone for alchemical symbols. She is successful in finding the Rose Key - in a set of tunnels that the Iranian government is about to destroy by bombing at any given moment - and scans the markings with her camera before barely escaping with her life. The Rose Key is in the shape of a larger-than-life black bull statue, and is engraved with both Aramaic text and symbols from the practice of alchemy. The Rose Keys form - the bull - may be attributed to the fact that many ancient cultures deemed the bull sacred, and therefore protected. The destruction by bombing of the Rose Key also makes an interesting correlation with the Rosetta Stone in that the Rosetta Stone was found in a time of war, was among the artifacts moved from the British museum during WWII to avoid destruction, and now is a point of contention in Egyptian repatriation battles, though Egypts political turmoil (similar to that of Iran depicted in the film) is one of the arguments against returning the artifact to its location of origin.
