Parers War.“It’s in the fear, the intense mateship, the humour; it’s in the daily detail of their lives, the casual heroism, the bloody death alongside them.” And Parer’s War, another singular production this year from the ABC, brings alive the story of the devoutly Catholic cameraman who always wanted to be ahead of the attacking troops so that his camera could see them as the enemy saw them.
While Parer is largely unknown these days, the footage he somehow shot in New Guinea’s Salamaua region, the site of terrible conflict, showing a blinded Australian militiaman being helped across a river by one of his mates, remains a significant part of cultural history.
The original documentary famously contains no battle shots but grainy images of injured troops hauled on stretchers over rivers and up steep inclines, as well as another famous sequence featuring the men of the retreating 39th Battalion, viewed from the waist down trudging through the mud.
Elegantly composed by producer Andrew Wiseman and director Alister Grierson,Parer’s War was shot on locations on the Gold Coast, Brisbane and Ipswich and at the Village Roadshow Studios. The photography is quite stunning, Mark Wareham working miracles of cinematic poignancy on a modest budget.
Their film is based on Neil McDonald’s biography, Kokoda Front Line, also the title of Parer’s documentary film produced in 1942 by wily Cinesound studio boss Ken G. Hall and the first Australian movie to win an Oscar.
Parer’s War is taut, intelligently constructed and sharply executed by Grierson, (who also gave us the feature Kokoda in 2006), with some nice touches of colourful period lingo from writer Alison Nisselle.
